For those in my Growthpoint class, I am posting my notes here (randysthoughts.wordpress.com). This series is base on the book “Exposing Witchcraft in the Church” by Rick Godwin.
The Nature of Spiritual Warfare
A. WE EXERCISE JESUS’ AUTHORITY
-Although Jesus triumphed over Satan, He expects God’s people to enforce the victory.
-You have a choice when “Satan’s Delivery Service” suddenly turns up on your doorstep with a package you didn’t order. Knowing that Jesus died for your sickness and disease, in His name you can slam the door in the enemy’s face–but you can also choose to do nothing and effectively receive it.
-No Christian defeats the devil on his or her own. We merely appropriate and administer the victory Jesus won.
-Victory has to be enforced, or it’s no victory.
B. ASSERTING AUTHORITY REQUIRES AGGRESSION
-The key to walking in the authority of Jesus is to enforce His authority.
-In spiritual warfare you have to be aggressive. Aggressive in praise, aggressive in prayer, and aggressive in proclaiming the Word of God.
C. TWO EXTREMES
-Christians generally go to one of two extremes: those that constantly battle with the enemy (they see a demon under every rock); and those that think that because the devil is defeated, there is nothing left to do, and whatever bad stuff life throws at them was meant to be.
-The truth is actually in between the two. Some trials in our lives are for the purpose of teaching us things or causing us to grow in faith and develop our character. Other bad things are caused by the enemy and we need to deal with them using the weapons and authority Jesus gave us.
-It is good to remember that even though Satan has been defeated, he is still out on bail…for now.
D. THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE
-When you try using the spirituals weapons that God has given us, if you don’t know the rules of warfare that God has established, your efforts will be futile. This is where many of us fall short.
E. THE BELIEVER’S JOB DESCRIPTION
-Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
-Many Christians stop reading this verse after, “For we wrestle not.” They think there is no need to wrestle. This leads to them living a less-than-victorious life, settling for whatever the enemy hands them.
-We aren’t fighting with the people that we view as our enemies. Don’t get sucked into arguments, feuds, and drama with people. The enemy is just using these people to get at us.
-It is also important to note who (or what) we are really fighting against. We are wrestling or fighting against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. All of these things listed are evil spirits/demons that operate at various levels.
-These are evil spirits that use, inhabit, come upon, or motivate people to do wrong things.
F. THE BATTLEFIELD OF THE MIND
-Strongholds can take the form of prejudices in our minds (basically, making up your mind before you get all the facts).
-Examples of strongholds:
-You’ve heard the statement, “Don’t confuse me with the facts.; I’ve got my mind made up.” That’s a stronghold.
-A stronghold resides in the person who thinks he is beyond the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Perhaps even after becoming a Christian, he committed a sin that he believes God is unable to forgive. Thus everyday he walks in defeat.
-A stronghold resides in the person who, when confronted with his bondage to a spirit of Jezebel or Lucifer, refuses to accept correction from God’s appointed authority in the church.
-God wants us to release the minds of people from captivity to Satan and bring their minds into captivity and obedience to Christ Jesus.
G. THE ONLY PEOPLE EQUIPPED TO INTERVENE
-Christians who understand spiritual warfare and are knowledgeable in the weapons of their warfare are the only group on Earth equipped to intervene in the spiritual realm.
H. THE FULL ARMOR (from Ephesians 6:14-18)
-The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
I. PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT: A WEAPON
-Prayer, praying in the Spirit in particular, works like a missile. It can be an effective weapon to attack a target halfway around the world.
Launching Our Weapons
-There are 3 main spiritual weapons:
- the blood of Jesus (combats sin)
- the Word of God (truth uttered from the Holy Spirit through men)
- -used with confession and faith and to directly respond to temptation
- the name of Jesus (the most powerful name ever)
A. FOUR LAUNCHING PADS
-The launching pads are: prayer, preaching, praise, and the word of your testimony
B. AFFIRMATIONS TO DEFEAT SATAN
- In Christ we have redemption through His blood.
- Through the blood we are continually cleansed from sin
- Through the blood we are made righteous
- Through the blood we are partakers in God’s holiness
Deliverance From the Law
A. ONLY DEATH CAN RELEASE US FROM THE LAW
-You don’t have to die to be released from the Law (Old Testament law), but somebody does. Thankfully Jesus died in order that we might be freed from being bound by the Law. You are no longer required to keep every word and sentence of the law to go to heaven!
-Colossians 1:21-23 – “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of you evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation–if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.”
B. THE KEY: UNION WITH CHRIST
-Every Christian is married to Christ. Just like regular marriages, some couples have very close, intimate, devoted relationships; while other couples have a cold, distant, noncommittal relationships and are not faithful.
C. THE RESULT OF UNION WITH THE LAW: WITCHCRAFT
-If we are in union with the Law, we open ourselves up to witchcraft which is displayed through manipulation, domination, and intimidation.
-In the church, a legalistic person may get upset over insignificant issues, distracting the church from her mission.
-People with a Lucifer or Jezebel spirit love legalism because it presents the opportunity to point out flaws in the authority structure of a church.
-It is interesting to note that people who tend to always point out the flaws of other people, often are struggling with those very same flaws in themselves.
D. THE RESULTS OF DELIVERANCE FROM THE LAW
- Freedom from condemnation
- Freedom to love
- Freedom to be led by the Holy Spirit
E. THE TRUE MEASURE OF SUCCESS
-Charles Finney said the gauge of a minister’s success is the measure of the Holy Spirit in his ministry.
